30 March 2007 Brits in couples 'prefer to holiday with friends'
Couples are forgoing romantic weekend breaks in favour of spending time on holiday apart from one another and with their friends.
Recently published research from AA Insurance reveals that 55 per cent of Britons currently in relationships have gone abroad on a mini break without their partner, while 13 per cent admit that they prefer to take a short break without their significant other.
Clare Emsley, head of the AA, said: "For many, mini breaks are a chance to have some time away from their partners and do things they wouldn't necessarily do if their partner was there."
The firm reports that the favoured pursuit of men on holiday is drinking in bars and clubs, while eating out in restaurants tops the list for women, followed by shopping, while both sexes enjoy sightseeing.
Last July, Halifax reported that men with leftover currency at the end of their holiday are most likely to purchase alcohol at the airport, with women opting for perfume instead.
