03 April 2007 Brits in the Solomon Islands 'should seek advice'
British visitors to the Solomon Islands have been advised by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office to seek advice from local tour operators following a recent earthquake that led to a tsunami in the archipelago.
With their location within the 'Ring of Fire' in Australasia making the islands subject to relatively frequent earthquakes, officials have always strongly recommended that holidaymakers obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling.
In particular, visitors should monitor local and international weather reports during the Australasian tropical cyclone season, which runs from November and May.
In this latest incident, the 7.8-rated earthquake hit the islands' Western Province at 07:40 local time, with the subsequent tsunami responsible for at least 20 deaths, though no Europeans have been reported as harmed.
While the capital city of Honiara was unaffected, Gizo Airport is currently closed as a result of damage caused by the earthquake.
