20 September 2007 Brits jet to sunshine 'to celebrate'
Many of the thousands of Britons who head abroad each year do so in celebration of milestones in their lives, it has been revealed.
According to a new study by Expedia, this is the most popular way of celebrating achievements and events that happen in life.
Research by the company revealed that three-quarters of Brits head overseas in celebration of a life-changing event - be it turning 40 or breaking up with a partner.
Top holiday destinations looked to include Venice, Amsterdam, the USA, Paris, Australia, Spain and Ibiza.
"It's a shame people aren't being more adventurous with their romantic breaks, especially with such fantastic new destinations such as Dubrovnik and Sofia available," managing director Caroline Cartellieri commented.
Wedding anniversaries topped the list for momentous occasions spent abroad, with 65 per cent of those surveyed admitting to jetting off to commemorate making their nuptial vows.
Other reasons for heading overseas included stag or hen nights, getting engaged, suffering a bereavement and getting fired.
