20 September 2007 Brits 'prevented from buying flights with dollars'
Airlines are increasingly taking measures to prevent savvy Brits from paying for their flights in dollars, it has been reported.
According to the Air Transport Users Council (AUC), a number of in-the-know travellers have been opting to book their flights on US websites in order to pay in dollars instead of pounds, saving themselves money.
However, the UK's consumer council for air travellers has revealed that airlines have now programmed their websites to prevent this from happening.
"For example, if you go into BA's website you can go onto the US site, but it will quote you the price in pounds not dollars," James Fremantle, spokesperson for the AUC, commented.
Mr Fremantle added that it is not illegal for airlines to do this, as they are entitled to "direct certain markets to certain fares".
According to an investigation by the Telegraph in May, UK customers can benefit from the strength of the pound over the dollar by using US-based websites such as Travelocity.com and Cheaptickets.com to book their holiday flights.
