13 November 2007 Brits 'spend more on online travel'
British tourists spend more money on booking travel via the internet than any other European country, it has been suggested.
Speaking at a seminar earlier this month, Amy Scarth, head of research for EyeTravel, reported that Britain accounts for just over a third (34 per cent) of all expenditure on online travel, reports TravelWeekly.
This compares to Germans - who make up a fifth of outlay - and France who spend some 14 per cent of the total.
Ms Scarth added that although both Europe and the United States are set to see a rise in online spending, offline booking should not be discounted.
She said: "In the US, online bookings will soon overtake offline business, but in the UK, 25 per cent of travel bookings are transacted online, which means off-line accounts for 75 per cent."
The research also showed that Britons are becoming increasingly comfortable in terms of booking a variety of travel using the internet.
Earlier this month, Dr Auliana Poon, managing director for Tourism Intelligence, reported that British tourists will have a crucial role in determining the path the international travel sector takes in the future.
