29 February 2008 Brits 'spend thousands' on honeymoons
More than £1,600 is spent on the average post-wedding getaway, new research has discovered.
A survey by esure found that a £1,614 is forked out by the average couple for their honeymoon, with nine in ten respondents believing this type of holiday has become more extravagant than in previous years.
The figure compares to that of honeymoons in the 1980s, when £547 was spent on celebrating a wedding with a trip.
And while a honeymoon may be a great excuse to push the boat out and travel to a far-flung destination, 75 per cent of people said they felt under pressure to take a honeymoon that was the "holiday of a lifetime".
Head of esure travel insurance Mike Pickard remarked: "The honeymoon is seen as a much bigger deal, as it offers the chance to have a dream holiday before couples can truly settle down to married life."
It could be that people are becoming influenced by celebrities going on lavish honeymoons and want to have the same experience.
According to About.com, Britney Spears and Kevin Federline took a trip to Fiji after the nuptials, while Catherin Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas took to the slopes in Aspen, Colorado.
