30 October 2007 Brits splash the cash on holiday extras
New research from moneysupermarket.com has revealed that the average Brit spends £700 on 'holiday extras' during their vacations - on top of the average cost of nearly £1,400 on travel, accommodation, food and alcohol.
Preparations in advance of trips eat up the largest amount of money - about £150 - with toiletries, beauty treatments and smart holiday clothing apparently occupying the minds of many well-prepared globetrotters.
Once at their destination, excursions such as museum passes and sporting adventures are also a significant expense at £110, as are souvenirs and presents which set the average holidaymaker back a similar amount.
Skiing and snowboarding vacations in particular entail significant expenses, with insurance company Direct Line pointing out that the average ski outfit and equipment costs a whopping £1,200.
The expense is prompting industry experts to remind winter travellers of the need to invest in adequate travel insurance.
Moneysupermarket.com estimates that more than a quarter of Brits travel without adequate insurance, despite it costing less than a tenth of their 'holiday extra' budget.
