13 June 2005  Brits take expensive gadgets on holiday
Nearly a third of British holidaymakers are taking the risk of packing £500-worth of expensive gadgets when they jet off to the Continent.

Direct Line found that many tourists feel they cannot live without those must-have gizmos.

Around 85 per cent admit taking their mobile abroad, while 74 per cent will not be parted with their digital cameras.

CD players (27 per cent) and iPods (17 per cent) are other essential holiday items and one in 10 even confess to taking their laptops away with them.

But while these items may make the holiday more pleasurable there is always a danger of losing them, as the head of Direct Line Travel Insurance, Chris Price explains: "Holiday theft is on the increase as holidaymakers are becoming more and more reliant on gadgets such as mobiles and iPods and want to be able to use the technology whether at home or abroad."

"However, while they are spending a small fortune on these gadgets, many still do not take out the necessary insurance cover to protect them while they are away," he added.

The insurance firm found a third (34 per cent) of those who had their gadgets stolen on holiday were not insured.

Thieves are particularly targeting iPods – theft of the revolutionary music devices has increased by 25 per cent in the last year and the figure is expected to rise even higher this year.
