31 January 2006 Building collapse catastrophe claims lives
At least 65 people have died following the collapse of an exhibition hall in Poland.
The unprecedented catastrophe occurred when the roof of the building caved in on Saturday, probably under the weight of a heavy snow fall.
Among the dead and 140 injured were Poles, Belgians and Germans, who were visiting the trade hall in Katowice for a pigeon exhibition.
A national day of mourning has now been called for by the country's president, Lech Kaczynski, after rescuers said there was little hope of pulling any more survivors from the wreckage.
On top of this tragedy, Poland is currently experiencing its coldest winter in several decades; a factor which is hindering rescuers in the search for any remaining survivors.
"With such a low temperature the chances of finding someone alive are slim but we still have hope," a rescue official told the BBC.
"The dogs have located 13 places where there are bodies but it is impossible to determine how many people will be found there."
