01 October 2005 California wildfire nears Los Angeles
Firefighters continue to fight a wildfire that is tearing its way through the hills of California.
The fire has already sent 16,200 acres of the San Fernando Valley up in flames to the north west of the city of Los Angeles.
The impressive work of the firefighters has ensured that just one house has been destroyed and only another four damaged by the fires.
Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes as a precautionary measure, and officials are hoping the weather will act in their favour to allow them to bring the fire under control.
The effort to contain the blaze has seen some 3,000 firefighters tackle the flames, helped by eleven helicopters that have poured water and fire retardant on the fires.
By the end of Friday, Los Angeles County fire deputy chief Mike Bryant hopes firefighters will have the fire 35 per cent contained, a rapid improvement from the five per cent that was reported the previous night.
