02 January 2008 Calls for more British bank holidays
UK consumers are being short changed when it comes to bank holidays, it has been reported.
Calls are being sounded by UK travel agent Thomas Cook for the UK to take steps to catch up with its European counterparts in terms of national holiday entitlement.
A study commissioned by Thomas Cook revealed that the UK gives workers fewer bank holidays than any other country in Europe excluding Romania, This is London reports.
UK workers are entitled to eight days off per year, while double that amount is given to workers in Spain and Cyprus and those in Slovenia receive 18 bank holidays.
"Normally at this time of year you'd expect holiday companies to offer just money off, but to show that we really want our campaign to make a difference we're prepared to offer our holidaymakers a day off now," commented Simon Carter, Thomas Cook's executive director of marketing.
