05 November 2007 Canada invests in tourism ahead of Olympics
With preparations for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic games in Canada well underway, the government has announced additional funding to promote tourism in the country.
The administration reported that CA$26 million (£13.2 million) will be invested to enhance tourism opportunities available as a result of the 2010 games in Vancouver.
Every year, over CA$400 million is invested in tourism infrastructure and activities by the Canadian government as part of its contribution to the industry.
Diane Ablonczy, secretary of state for small business and tourism, said: "Our government believes that a strong tourism industry plays an important role in the economy of all regions of Canada and is supporting tourism through various programs and services."
She added that the additional investment will maximise the tourism opportunities provided by the Vancouver games.
The Winter Games in Vancouver will include 17 days of Olympic events featuring competitors from over 80 countries, in addition to ten days of Paralympic competition.
