In Montreal in the new year, the Fete des Neiges de Montreal is being held between January 26th and February 8th, at Parc Jean-Drapeau.
A popular family event, the festival includes ice hockey matches, the Fete des Neiges outdoor disco, the icy Skater's Path from which views of downtown Montreal can be enjoyed as well as tobogganing and the Mont Yoplait tube slides.
Meanwhile, in Banff, the 14th Annual Ice Magic International Ice Sculpture Competition is being held in January at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.
"Twelve teams of three carvers are given 15 blocks of ice weighing 300 lbs each, which they must transform into seven-foot tall world-class ice sculptures in three days," the event website reveals.
The theme for 2008 is snow queen, ice fairies and the enchanted forest.
