12 December 2007 Canary Islands to host classical concerts
Lovers of classical music can enjoy their favourite works by Brahms and Beethoven in the winter sunshine this new year, if they head to the Canary Islands.
The autonomous Spanish communities will be hosting the 24th Annual Music Festival of the Canaries from January 10th until March 1st 2008.
Gran Canaria will hold the opening concert at the Kraus Auditorium in Las Palmas where Pedro Halffter will direct the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra with the Children's Choir of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Gran Canaria in a performance of Beethoven's Concert No 3.
Over the eight weeks 65 recitals will be held in Gran Canaria and Tenerife as well as on the smaller islands of Lanzarote, La Palma, Fuerteventura, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa.
In 2006, the Canary Islands received 9,530,039 foreign tourists. The islands are popular for their hot sunny climate and plentiful beaches.
