15 June 2005 Card fraud hits tourists abroad
The total amount of fraud on UK issued cards abroad amounted to £92.5 million during 2004, according to a new report.
APACS, the industry association representing plastic card issuers, found that card fraud had actually fallen from previous years, but that the pitfalls had not diminished entirely.
The research shows that just under half of all card fraud took place in three countries.
The US represented 18 per cent, equivalent to £16.4 million, followed closely by France on 17 per cent, or £15.8 million, with Spain making up 13 per cent, some £12.3 million.
There were two countries who entered the list of top ten hotspot destinations for card fraud, namely Japan and Canada.
APACS was keen to highlight that despite the fact card fraud had fallen, UK holidaymakers should not become complacent about using their cards abroad.
