05 August 2006  Cheap foreign travel leaves Brits clueless
As holidaymakers increasingly choose to make their money go further and take their annual holidays abroad, knowledge of UK destinations is decreasing, according to a new survey.

The poll, which was conducted by online bank egg, found that nearly two-thirds of Britons prefer to travel abroad with 50 per cent claiming cost as one of the key reasons.

While the survey also showed that there has been a 5.4 per cent increase in the cost of UK holidays in the last year, 66 per cent of the 1,000 people questioned did not even know where popular UK holiday spots such as the Lake District or the Cotswolds were.

Alison Wright, egg's chief marketing officer, said: "Going on a summer holiday is one of the biggest annual financial commitments for most households, so it is no surprise that we are increasingly trying to find ways to budget and bring the cost down.

"It is not just about cheap flights and accommodation, but the additional costs that you incur when you are there ? for instance whilst a beer in Estonia might cost you the equivalent of a pound, the same in St Tropez may cost five times that."

One in seven Britons were unable to locate even one of the eight top UK holidaying locations which included the New Forest, the Peak District, Snowdonia and Ben Nevis.

Recent predictions from online travel company Opodo suggest that Bulgaria will be the top holidaying destination for 2007.
