12 April 2006 China's hot spots
Adventurers heading to the Far East might be interested to know what the top 50 tourism destinations for foreign visitors to China are.
The list which was voted for by the pan-national population of the People's Republic was sponsored by the Canadian daily newspaper the Globe and Mail along with other provincial newspapers across China, the People's Daily Online reports.
The selection of Chinese natural and cultural highlights includes well-known destinations such as the Imperial Palace in Beijing and the terracotta warriors in Shaanxi province, among others for adventurous holidaymakers.
A grand ceremony was held on April 8 to mark the announcement of the definitive top 50 spots for foreign tourists.
The list was decided by a panel of sponsors and diplomatic envoys, following a 100-day non-governmental appraisal which involved nationwide balloting on a shortlist of 200 via the internet, text messages and newspaper questionnaires.
China is the third largest country on the planet and the history of its first recorded dynasty dates back over 4,000 years, the last of which was brought to an end by the revolution led by Sun Yat-sen in 1911.
