15 November 2007 Christmas getaway 'a modern day trend'
People are more inclined to go on holiday at Christmas nowadays than in previous years, according to airline Thomsonfly.
A spokesperson for the company said that heading off on holiday over the festive period is something of a modern phenomenon.
"A lot of people do see it as an opportunity to travel. People change and what families want to do changes," the spokesperson said.
"People welcome the idea of doing things like this more than they did a few years ago."
She added that trips to Lapland as well as themed holidays are popular, while the airline also finds that its cruise programme attracts a high volume of guests during the Christmas period.
Holding out for last-minute deals - which can save travellers some money - is also a noted trend, according to the airline.
Earlier this month, research by Lloyds TSB revealed that Christmas spending by consumers in Britain will reach a level of £4.7 billion during the upcoming festive period.
