07 March 2008 Church to relax stance on Easter holidays
The Church of England has said that there are a number of advantages in children being in school during Holy Week, rather than being on vacation in an Easter holiday destination.
In a statement to the Times, the Church indicated that this time period gives schools the chance to "explore the themes of the days leading up to Christ's crucifixion".
The spokesperson also suggested that dioceses will probably not object to its faith schools ending the link between Easter and the holidays in order to bring processes in line with other local authority schools.
With Easter coming early this year, teaching groups have expressed concern that parents will take their children out of schools in the days around the bank holiday weekend in order to head to Easter holiday destinations - instead of waiting for the official holiday period to begin on Friday April 4th.
John Dunford, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, told the newspaper: "There is a real risk that parents will pull children out of school during term time."
Easter holiday destinations for skiers are still available for competitive prices, the publication also reported this week.
