08 February 2008 City breaks 'gaining popularity'
City breaks are gaining in popularity with families looking to enjoy short breaks, it has been reported.
According to Kirker Holidays, there has been a "significant" increase in the attraction of such holidays to parents who perhaps both work and are short on time.
Director of sales and marketing Ted Wake added that families are moving away from "sugar-coated" holidays that focus on children and onto cultural city breaks which offer an educational angle for both children and adults.
"There is a feeling that the Disney-style formula is perhaps too much of a good thing - it's slightly sugar-coated and child-focused. Why not do something that is a bit more intellectually stimulating?" Mr Wake asked.
Kirker Holidays is a tour operator offering trips to over 100 cities in 32 countries.
Last year, travel insurance provider Insure & Go provided research suggesting that British families spent an average of £837 on their summer holiday in 2007.
