13 March 2007 Conservative air tax plans 'unfair and unworkable'
Recently announced plans from the Conservative Party to increase taxation on flights to and from the UK are unfair and unworkable, it has been claimed and could potentially damage the country's economy.
The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has responded to Greener Skies - the consultation document regarding the issue from the party - and resolved to engage in dialogue with its members and formulate a response before the June 11th deadline.
David Marshall, head of policy at the association, said: "As an industry we know that aviation and travel has to take responsibility for its share of emissions, but any measures need to be proportionate and effective."
ABTA notes that flights are responsible for six per cent of carbon emissions within the UK.
In January 2007, ABTA called on the government to include small-scale carbon offsetting projects used by the travel industry in its kitemark programme, in addition to larger schemes.
