25 January 2008 Criteria on eco-travel revealed
The main criteria for seeing whether a holiday - and holiday operator - is eco-friendly has been revealed.
According to Responsible Travel, there are five main categories in which holiday companies can be checked for best practice in terms of environmentally-friendly travel, the Telegraph reports.
Carbon reduction, carbon offsetting, conservation schemes, responsible tourism and on the ground behaviour are the main groups.
"For an industry that is dependent on pristine environments and local cultures, many parts of the tourism industry have been remarkably slow to recognise their wider responsibilities to both local communities and the environment," Justin Francis, co-founder of Responsible Travel told the publication.
Whether companies use alternative energy, have offsetting schemes, make efforts to minimise harm done to the environment by tourism and make efforts to source local produce on the ground are all vital, it is reported.
First Choice was named best tour operator. First Choice is a package holiday and last minute deal provider.
