07 February 2008 Customers can 'benefit in short-term' from airline financial problems
Holidaymakers look set to benefit in the short-term from financial problems suffered by some airlines, it has been reported.
According to the Air Transport Users Council (ATUC), the budget airline market is becoming very saturated which means that it might be a good time for consumers.
James Fremantle, industry affairs manager with the ATUC commented that if flights on airlines are empty, operators will need to fill them up somehow and will cut prices in order to stimulate demand for them.
"If they slash fares then consumers are going to have some real bargins for the next few weeks or so," he added.
The comment comes as Ryanair issued a profit warning for next year due to a combination of factors including rising oil prices, weakening consumer demand and higher airport charges.
ATUC is the consumer council for air travellers in the UK.
