13 July 2005 Dennis causes further destruction
Hurricane Dennis has left a path of destruction in its wake, as it sweeps through south-west Florida.
Moving in from the Gulf Coast, the hurricane has forced the evacuation of 1.5 million people in coastal regions stretching from western Florida to New Orleans, Louisiana.
So far, five people have been killed by the hurricane. Of these, three died when their vehicle was overturned and swept into ditchwater.
Another was electrocuted by power lines, while a falling tree caused the fifth fatality.
The hurricane could have caused as much as £2.8 billion worth of damage in insured losses, according to Risk Management Solutions.
Wind and rain has caused the loss of electricity and serious road flooding throughout the affected states of Florida, Mississippi and Alabama, as well as flood warnings for Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Although the storm has now been downgraded to a tropical depression as it moves further inland, officials say it could still prove dangerous, so travellers should still take care.
