08 November 2005 Devastating tornado hits America's Midwest
A tornado that hit America's Midwest last night has left at least 21 people dead and dozens more injured.
Striking in the early hours of this morning without warning, the tornado has added to a season of harsh weather for America, with a record number of tropical storms and hurricanes causing vast amounts of damage to the states around the Gulf of Mexico this season.
Areas affected include northern Kentucky and south-western Indiana, with the largest number of dead at a trailer park in Evansville, Indiana.
Commenting on the number of people who were asleep and unaware of the tornado, Annie Groves, chief deputy coroner for Vanderburgh County, said: "They were in trailer homes, homes that were just torn apart by the storm, so they're just now getting in there trying to find people.
"It's just terrible."
Firefighters and members of the National Guard are now working in the area to search for more survivors amidst the rubble and debris.
A record number of 23 named tropical storms have hit America this season, with the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina likely to become the most expensive US disaster ever.
