27 February 2007 Disinterested attitude to insurance 'puts travellers at risk'
Holidaymakers, especially those engaging in winter sports, have been warned that a disinterested attitude to travel insurance can put them at risk when abroad.
Moneyextra has advised those overseas to pay close attention to the travel insurance policy purchased, noting that different companies offer varying levels of cover as standard, with most insurers offering winter sports cover as an optional extra.
The financial services comparison firm urges holidaymakers to check for any exclusions to their cover in addition to reading the exact wording of the policy.
Robin Amlot, senior editor at Moneyextra, said: "If you enjoy the adrenaline rush of winter sports, you should plan ahead to make sure your travel insurance is appropriate."
He added that travellers looking to head to the slopes should check they are covered for the sports they are intending to engage in, in addition to mountain rescue in case of emergencies.
Last December, American Express reported that 15 per cent of skiers lose three days of holiday on average as a result of injury.
