26 November 2007 Displaced cruise passengers flown to Chile
The remaining passengers of ill-fated cruise ship M/S Explorer were evacuated to Punta Arenas, Chile, yesterday, after the vessel hit an iceberg and sank in the Antarctic waters late last week.
In total 77 people were flown to Chile by the air force of Santiago and some were given medical examinations.
The first flight from King George Island transported 75 passengers as well as two members of staff from King George Island took place on November 24th.
Passengers onboard the ship hailed from Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Britain, Canada, China, Denmark, Holland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan and Switzerland among other nations.
"All passengers and crew, including the captain of M/S Explorer, are completely safe and in good spirits," a statement from GAP Adventures, the Canadian firm which organised the tour, reported.
The ship ran into difficulties after striking underwater ice off Antarctica on Friday November 23rd.
