05 January 2006 Dozens feared dead in Indonesia
Dozens of people are feared dead after a landslide struck a village in central Indonesia.
Brought on by heavy Monsoon rains, the landslide has left roughly 200 people missing as a deluge of mud and rocks hit more than 100 houses in Cijeruk, Java, early on Wednesday morning.
A number of villagers participating in early morning prayers at the mosque escaped unharmed as it was one of the few areas not hit by the landslide.
"We suspect there are about 200 people in 120 houses buried in the mud," local police chief Budi Warityo said. He added that just 12 people had been rescued so far.
Wednesday's landslide is the second to strike Indonesia this week; on Monday nearly 60 people were killed after flooding and landslides tore through villages in east Java.
Indonesian police were put on terror alert over the Christmas season throughout the country amid fears of a possible terrorist attack against the country's Christians.
Both the recent landslide catastrophes and terrorism threat serve to highlight the importance of travel insurance for those planning on visiting such regions.
