31 December 2005 Dozens killed in avalanche
Dozens of people have been killed in an avalanche in north-west Pakistan.
Among the dead, which at present is thought to total at least 24 people, are locals who were digging for precious gemstones in a remote mountain range in the Kohistan region of the country.
Although the avalanche struck on Tuesday, news of the disaster took two days to filter through to the police.
"There were around 120 people extracting gemstones when the avalanche struck, burying a number of them," local police chief Ashfaq Ahmed told AFP news agency.
"Locals have dug all the bodies out of the snow," Mr Ahmed added.
The avalanche struck in the same region as October's catastrophic earthquake which left at least 73,000 dead.
