23 May 2006  Drivers to World Cup urged to take travel insurance
Motorists driving to this year's World Cup in Germany are being urged to remember to take necessary travel protection along with their passport.

The Co-operative Insurance Society (CIS) has made warning ahead of the competition to ensure fans are covered in the event that they break down or have an accident away from the shores of home.

David Newman director of marketing at CIS, said that policies exist that provide cover for not just the World Cup but other trips abroad.

Drivers should also check whether their current policy covers motoring abroad and whether a "Green Card" is needed for motor insurance.

Hundreds of Britons are expected to drive to Germany to watch England play in the tournament next month, but a lack of travel cover could cost them dearly.

A breakdown can easily cost £1,200 just to get the car back to the UK, according to CIS, plus different motoring rules means that unaware Britons are more liable to accidents.

CIS pointed out that Austria, Belgium, France and Germany, the countries which many Britons may drive through, had the most lethal "A" roads in Europe.

By having sufficient protection cover, England fans can enjoy the World Cup with only the injuries of footballers to worry about.
