25 February 2008 Eagle-eyed golfers opt for Alabama
A holiday in Alabama would suit golf-loving holidaymakers down to a tee, according to one commentator.
According to Alabama Bureau of Travel and Tourism, the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is fast becoming Alabama's number one tourist attraction.
Located in one of the emerging destinations for holidaymakers travelling to the United States, the bureau reports that the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail attracted in the region of 535,000 golfers to Alabama last year.
The Golf Trail is comprised of a total 26 public golf courses between north Alabama and Mobile. It also includes a variety of resort hotels and spas. Roughly 40 per cent of golfers visiting the trail are not from Alabama.
Other top tourist spots in the emerging destination of Alabama included the Birmingham Zoo which attracted 515,028 people last year.
Alabama is known as the Yellowhammer State and the Heart of Dixie and was immortalised in the Lynyrd Skynyrd song Sweet Home Alabama.
