03 December 2005 Earthquake hits Japan
A strong earthquake hit Japan late on Friday, the country's meteorological agency said.
Measuring a magnitude of 6.4, the quake struck 40 kilometres off the coast of the state of Miyagi and 300 kilometres north of Tokyo, but did not warrant a tsunami warning.
As yet there have been no reports of any injuries or damage in the region, according to Associated Press.
Japan is particularly susceptible to earthquakes due to the fact that it lies on four tectonic plates.
Earlier this year an earthquake measuring 7.2 hit north-eastern Japan, injuring five people and causing landslides, damage to buildings and widespread power outages.
Earthquakes which strike under the seabed have been a particular cause for concern this year, especially in the Pacific, after a tsunami generated by an earthquake killed hundred of thousands of people on Boxing Day last year.
A tsunami early-warning system is in the first stages of implementation in the waters off of the coast of Indonesia, while experts are examining the possibility of such a system for the Mediterranean.
