16 June 2005 Earthquakes rock Pacific coastline
An earthquake has occurred off the coast of California, the third such quake within just 48 hours along the Pacific edge of the Americas.
The tremors were of magnitude 7, and witnesses reported that buildings shook, but there have been no claims of damage or casualties.
A slightly smaller earthquake hit the Rat Islands region of Alaska on Tuesday, but again no casualties were discovered.
On Monday, a more serious earthquake of magnitude 7.9 hit Northern Chile, causing the death of at least 11 people and injuring 200.
The region is popular among backpackers, and neighbouring Peru and Bolivia both felt tremors resulting from the earthquake.
Consequences of the quake included landslides and the destruction of many homes, as well as the loss of power and burst water mains.
In Iquique, a coastal town 70 miles from the epicentre of the earthquake, panic set in as people ran into the streets fearing the possibility of a tsunami.
