06 November 2007 Egyptian tourism boosted after unveiling of King Tut
Tourism to Egypt is set to receive a boost following the unveiling of the face of King Tutankhamun for the first time since he was mummified over 3,000 years ago, it has been claimed.
Following its removal from quartz sarcophagus, the body has been placed in a climate-controlled glass cabinet to preserve the remains of the 19-year old king, the Associated Press reports.
Zahi Hawass, chief of antiquities in Egypt, said: "I can say for the first time that the mummy is safe and the mummy is well preserved.
"All the tourists who will enter this tomb will be able to see the face of Tutankhamun for the first time."
He added that the "amazing" face of the king offers magic and mystery to those that view it.
In other tourism news that could spur visits to Egypt for a glimpse of King Tutankhamun's remains, artefacts from his tomb are set to go on display at the O2 Centre in London, Greenwich, the Daily Telegraph reports.
