11 March 2008 Euro spending to hit new heights?
British holidaymakers who headed to traditional and emerging destinations in Europe last year spent some £18 billion during their breaks, a new report suggests.
M&S Travel Money has claimed that if stacked vertically and in packs of five euro notes, this amount would reach a height of around 552 kilometres.
And 2008 will be no different, according to the financial services provider.
Those heading off to Easter holiday destinations on the continent are set to contribute to high levels of euro spending this year, it added.
Fraser Millar, M&S Travel Money manager, Fraser Millar, said 58 per cent of currency sales in the UK are for euros.
He said the currency is the UK's "favourite form of holiday cash", suggesting it is widely used by holidaymakers heading to traditional and emerging destinations.
Indeed, the European commission website claims it is one of the most important currencies in the world and is shared by 15 member states and some 320 million EU citizens.
"With the recent wintry weather at home, and an early start on the spring/summer season, 2008 could be another record year for the euro," Mr Millar added.
