18 October 2005 FCO advises travellers over bird flu
Those who have arrangements to travel to Romania or Turkey should make sure they have their travel protection in place after reports confirmed the outbreak of bird flu in both countries.
Bird flu, or avian flu, was discovered on a farm in north-west Turkey, and then at a farm in the Danube Delta in Romania.
Even though there have been no reports of human infections, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has issued advice for travellers to the region.
The FCO is warning people to avoid eating poultry dishes that are not properly cooked, and to not come into contact with domestic, wild or caged birds.
The chance of human infection is slim, although 50 fatalities have occurred in Asia since the start of 2004.
Bird flu has been discovered in destinations such as Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Japan, but the FCO has issued no restrictions on travellers wishing to visit those areas.
