06 June 2006 Fans follow footy abroad
Four out of five British people have admitted to planning purchasing their summer holiday tickets this year around the football World Cup.
A survey from Halifax travel reveals that 81 per cent of Britons will follow the football from their holiday destination with 42 per cent having purposefully picked a holiday resort where they will be able to follow all the sporting action.
While 40 per cent of fans, many of whom will take out holiday cover, aim to search out a British bar in which to follow the World Cup, 78 per cent of fans planning to holiday in Spain said that if England gets knocked out they will cheer on their host country instead.
Senior underwriter at Halifax travel, Vicky Emmott, commented: "It's very interesting to see how The World Cup is shaping how Britons holiday this year.
"Many die-hard fans are carefully researching the resort, accommodation and even flight times to make sure that they can watch the big games.
"Holding the tournament in Europe is definitely playing a key factor in this - making it much more affordable and practical to combine watching the football with a summer holiday," Ms Emmott added.
The World Cup kicks off on June 9th with the first match being played between Germany and Costa Rica.
