07 March 2007 Fees hit holidaying card users
Almost one in two Britons are unaware that using a credit card to fund holiday shopping could cost them in extra charges, claims a new study.
Some 47 per cent of holidaymakers heading for destinations such as Europe, Asia and Australasia do not realise that putting expenses including car hire costs on a credit card could lead to a charge of up to 2.75 per cent being levied by their bank, according to research.
A report from the Post Office reveals that Britons could collectively pay out an additional £258 million in credit card fees when shopping for books, CDs, videos and DVDs while abroad.
"We urge holidaymakers to check with their bank or credit card provider whether they will be paying a fee to shop overseas before they go," comments Claire Oldstein, head of communications at the company.
The spokesperson adds that holidaymakers are now four times more likely to use a credit card rather than currency on shopping trips abroad.
