27 February 2008 Ferry travel 'regaining popularity'
Travel by ferry is gaining popularity again with holidaymakers, one commentator has claimed.
The Port of Dover reports that part of this popularity may be due to the fact that passage through a seaport is usually smoother and easier than travel through an airport.
Meanwhile, Mike Southey, a public relations manager of the board responsible for the harbour at Dover, noted that traffic numbers have increased at the port over the last three years.
Prior to this, the PR manager reported, there had been a period in which a "small shift" towards airline travel had been observed.
"In the last three years, our tourist traffic numbers have shown growth, and we think this is because people have perhaps tried an alternative to ferry travel and it's not worked out as well as they would have hoped," he added.
Mr Southey claimed that in 2007, 15 million passenger journeys were made through the port.
He stated that cheap flights had lured passengers away but many had returned after the price and travel experience failed to meet their expectations.
