20 August 2007 Firm reports on 'bizarre' travel insurance claims
Most holidaymakers will understand the importance of travel insurance for common problems abroad, from flight cancellation to missing bags, though recent research from one firm has found that some consumers end up making much stranger claims on their policies.
Go Travel Insurance reports the case of a claim for a bad haircut that was done abroad, while one traveller was harassed by a camera-stealing monkey in Gibraltar.
Christian Young, chief executive at the firm, said: "Delayed luggage, lost cameras and missing passports are the usual claims faced by our staff, but there are a handful of people every year who come through to us with incredible stories."
Another policyholder made a claim for the contents of a missing bag - those being a packet of mints, newspaper and bottler of water.
In March 2007, More Than reported that 26 per cent of the travel insurance claims received by the firm during 2006 were for cancellation, with the average cost of each claim at £856.
