16 December 2005 'Flashpackers' shun the mundane
Exotic, off-the-beaten track locations are becoming fought over by backpackers and a new type of 'flashpackers'.
Wealthy and with little concern for budgets, such travellers are increasingly searching for holidays which can provide greater experiences than lying on a beach.
A report conducted for the International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM), which opened this week in Cannes, found that wealthy explorers are emerging as a major new sector in both the long and short haul markets, reports the Times.
"More remote rather than exotic destinations are increasing in popularity and providers will search out new experiences for their clients who wish to bring back something that they have learned, something others have never experienced, giving them their own 'private stories'," said Paul Flatters, CEO of the Future Foundation.
Shunning slightly more mundane destinations, travellers with more cash to spend are now taking holidays such as motor biking around India and round the world tours to remote destinations including the Galapagos Islands and the Serengeti Plains.
