23 June 2005 Flooding forces 100,000 to evacuate
China continues to be subjected to torrential rain, with rising floodwater affecting the city of Wuzhou.
Some 100,000 people had to be evacuated as water levels in the Xijiang River, which runs through the city, reached dangerous levels of 25.74 metres, exceeding the warning level by eight metres.
Ren Kuikang, chief of the flood control and drought relief office in Wuzhou, told state television: "In the face of these floods, the attitude of the government is to make sure that no one is killed."
Residents in low-lying areas fled for higher ground, as sirens sounded overnight.
Reuters reports that more than 44 people have lost their lives in the province of Guangxi due to flooding and landslides.
Several other regions of China have succumbed to heavy rains - landslides have damaged sections of the Beijing-Kowloon railway line, disrupting dozens of trains, and nine people have died due to the torrential rain in eastern Guangdong.
