29 February 2008 Flying while pregnant 'can be acceptable'
There is no set list of dos and don'ts for pregnant women looking to travel by air, an expert has said.
Janet Fyle, from the Royal College of Midwives, said that it is not possible to know what can happen to a pregnant woman once a plane has taken off.
It is therefore important to consider the range of possibilities, Ms Fyle said, adding that each pregnant woman is different and it is impossible to know what can happen in the air.
"There is no list that would contain dos and don'ts, every case needs to be addressed individually," she said.
"Some airlines say they will admit pregnant women up to a certain number of weeks," Ms Fyle added, noting that many often wish to see a certificate of health from a doctor or midwife.
However, there are certain cases where flying should be completely out of the question, including when the woman has a low-lying placenta or raised blood pressure.
