19 December 2007 France by rail 'good for green holidaymakers'
Holidaymakers concerned about their carbon footprint are being encouraged to getaway to France because of its high-speed rail network, it was claimed today.
Trisha Mason, founder and managing director of property consultancy VEF, said eco-friendly travellers wanting to take a holiday are switching from far-flung destinations to France as it is accessible by rail instead of air.
In particular, she cited the US as a destination only realistically reachable by plane - and said "huge numbers" of people were choosing France over America thanks to Eurostar and the TGV rail network.
Ms Mason added: "84 per cent of our clients who visited our partner office in Burgundy in 2007 said that this was a prime factor in them choosing this area."
The TGV offers passengers more than 60 destinations and travels at up to 186 mph, making it a viable choice for those who want to decrease their carbon footprint when venturing abroad.
