30 August 2006 Global warming to change holiday plans
Climate change could lead to a transformation to the travel industry and a shift in where UK holidaymakers choose to travel, according to recent research.
Halifax Travel has produced the Holiday 2030 report, which states that average temperatures increase by between one and two degrees Celsius leading to a rise in sea levels that would threaten shorelines.
David Rochester, senior pricing manager at Halifax Travel, said that with these changes the destinations of UK holiday makers could well alter, with trips to Scandinavia in the summer becoming the norm.
"Holidaymakers will be considerably more at risk abroad in 20 or 30 years than they are today. As an industry, travel insurers need to prepare for the impact of climate change," he said.
"The travel market itself will change as our travel habits alter," he added.
These concerns follow a recent report by the Journal of Sustainable Tourism that suggests there will be a move away from the Mediterranean as a holiday destination in the coming decades as a result of climate change.
