17 September 2007 Government in bid to 'smarten up' UK hotels
The government is aiming to get an increased number of hotels listed under the country's national tourist accommodation star-grading scheme, it has been announced.
As part of the plans to capitalise on the games, which will see millions of overseas visitors head to the capital, the UK tourism industry is aiming to smarten up the image of Britain's hotels.
According to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, there will be a move to improve standards, with the aim of 85 per cent of hotels becoming accredited under the scheme by 2012.
Noting that the 2012 London Olympics represents a "huge opportunity for the UK tourism industry", tourism minister Margaret Hodge called for the plan's longevity to be a consideration.
"In five years time millions of visitors will be coming here for the first time and we want them to come back time and time again - and bring their family and friends. It's about creating a lasting legacy," she commented.
According to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, 2006 saw London overseas tourist numbers rise to a record 15.6 million visitors.
