14 March 2008 Half a million signatures for extra bank holiday petition
Holidaymakers could soon have more chance to explore emerging destinations, as a petition to give UK residents an extra bank holiday gains additional support.
Since its launch in December 2007, the Thomas Cook petition calling for an extra day's holiday for hardworking Britons has attracted in excess of half a million signatures.
Currently, Britons receive an average of eight national bank holidays per year, with the majority falling in the spring and summer.
"We have been working with MPs in parliament to raise the profile of our campaign and today's report puts more pressure on the government to listen to the half a million people calling for a new bank holiday," Simon Carter Thomas, Thomas Cook executive director of marketing, stated.
The UK's bank holidays include three in winter - Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day - four in the spring - Good Friday, Easter Monday, May Day and Spring Bank Holiday - and one in the summer, falling on August 25th.
