22 November 2007 Heathrow expansion 'to be announced'
Expansion plans for London Heathrow Airport are expected to be announced by transport secretary Ruth Kelly today.
Yesterday, Ms Kelly stated that scrapping plans to build a sixth runway at the international airport in London would not affect global warming but that the upshot for the UK economy would be negative.
However, a Friends of the Earth aviation campaigner, Richard Dyer, disagreed with the transport secretary's assertion.
"Building a third runway at Heathrow will inevitably lead to even more flights and more pollution," Mr Dyer said, according to the BBC.
London Heathrow Airport claims to be the world's busiest international airport, serving 180 destinations in more than 90 countries.
In 2007, 68 million passengers are expected to fly through the airport - which is designed to accommodate 45 million.
