25 August 2005 Heavy flooding strikes Europe
Europe has been hit by severe flooding as a summer of extreme weather conditions continues without respite.
Torrential rains bombarded large swathes of central and eastern Europe, with as many as 34 people being killed in the process.
Romania is one of the worst affected countries, with seven elderly people dying overnight and 1,400 homes being flooded.
Meanwhile, at least 11 people are dead or missing in Switzerland, Germany and Austria, with thousands unable to return to their homes.
The amount of rain in central Switzerland in the last 48 hours was the average for a whole month. Rains prompted landslides and train services were suspended and major roads closed.
Telephone services were affected and roads flooded in the Austrian provinces of Vorarlberg and Tyrol, while troops in Germany helped to evacuate the Bavarian town of Eschenlohe.
More heavy rain is forecast for Switzerland, with emergency services stretched and struggling to restore basic services.
