09 November 2007 Historical Turkish area undergoing facelift
A historical and cultural corner of Ankara is set to be restored in order to bring the place back to life.
The Altindag Municipality has started rejuvenating the streets surrounding the Turkish city's citadel with the hope of making the area more appealing to visitors, reports Today's Zaman.
Can and Atpazari streets make up the oldest part of the traditional trading haven in Ankara and with contractors already hard at work, the exteriors of a hundred houses will soon be completed to give the whole area a welcome facelift.
Altindag mayor Veysel Tiryaki commented: "There are approximately 100 buildings located on Can and Atpazari streets that are included in our project to improve the streets. They reflect many aspects of Ankara's historical architecture."
The municipality has been behind a number of other restoration projects including the renovation of 80 residences in the Hamamonu district of the city.
